Car shipping between Chicago, Illinois and Southwest Florida
Enterprise Auto Transport arranges door-to-door vehicle transportation from Chicago and its suburbs to the Gulf Coast of Florida, and back north again in the spring. The customers on this route are mostly seasonal residents and second-home owners, along with relocating households, families sending a vehicle to a student or parent, and people buying or selling a car between the two regions.
We are an owner-operated, federally licensed and bonded broker, BBB Accredited with an A+ rating, serving customers since February 2012. We arrange transportation with qualified motor carriers. Our home base is in Naples, at the receiving end of this corridor.

The Chicago end
Picking up a vehicle in Chicago
Chicago is really two pickups: the suburbs, where a full-size transporter can usually work at the curb, and the city, where street width, permit parking and truck restrictions decide the plan.
Highway access
Southbound carriers leave the metro on I-65 through northwest Indiana toward Indianapolis and Louisville, or on I-57 through central Illinois before cutting across to I-75. The practical staging areas are the suburban expressway corridors - the I-294 Tri-State corridor, I-88 through DuPage County, I-355 through Will County, the I-90 corridor toward Schaumburg and Rockford, and the US-41 and I-94 frontage into Lake County - wide, commercially zoned and easy for a transporter to enter and exit. Lake Shore Drive and the boulevard system prohibit commercial trucks, and the downtown expressways are no place to load, so city pickups stage elsewhere.
City streets and neighborhoods
Most of Chicago's older neighborhoods - Lincoln Park, Lakeview, the Gold Coast, Wicker Park, Logan Square and the bungalow belt - have narrow, parked-up side streets, residential permit zones, alleys and low rail viaducts that a 75-foot, 13-foot-6 transporter cannot use. Pickup there is usually staged at a wide arterial or a nearby lot a short walk away. The suburbs are the opposite: Schaumburg, Oak Brook, Hinsdale, Burr Ridge, Orland Park, Naperville's western neighbors, and the North Shore and northwest suburbs have wide, level streets a carrier can work on directly. Pickup on the North Shore has its own quirks - see Winnetka to Southwest Florida car shipping and Wilmette to Southwest Florida car shipping. Further north in Lake County, ravine bridges and long private drives change the picture again: Lake Forest to Southwest Florida car shipping. Out in the northwest suburbs, at-grade freight crossings and acreage driveways matter more than ravines: Barrington to Southwest Florida car shipping. West of the city the BNSF main line and the Tri-State set the pattern: Hinsdale to Southwest Florida car shipping. North of the city, a village bracketed by the Edens and the Tri-State loads differently again: Glenview to Southwest Florida car shipping. Further north, where the Edens ends and the Spur ties it to the Tri-State: Northbrook to Southwest Florida car shipping. Out west, where the tollways meet, long private drives and gated entries set the pattern: Oak Brook to Southwest Florida car shipping. Next door, where the Union Pacific West line runs straight through the middle of town: Elmhurst to Southwest Florida car shipping. Northwest of the city, where IL-53 and I-90 frame the approach: Arlington Heights to Southwest Florida car shipping. Southwest of the city, where I-55, I-294 and Route 83 meet low-density residential streets: Burr Ridge to Southwest Florida car shipping. Further west in the Fox Valley, where the final approach depends on which side of the Fox River the vehicle is on: St. Charles to Southwest Florida car shipping.
Gated, private and high-rise buildings
Chicago proper has few gated streets, but gated golf communities exist in the suburbs - Wynstone in North Barrington is one - and downtown high-rises are their own access problem: loading docks, restricted hours, move-in reservations and building-management approval. Associations and buildings may restrict commercial trucks or limit standing time; where those rules apply we plan around them rather than test them on pickup day.
Alternate meeting points
When a truck cannot safely reach the door, we agree a nearby location in advance - the large lots at Woodfield in Schaumburg, Oakbrook Center, Old Orchard in Skokie, Orland Square, or the commercial frontage along Golf Road and 159th Street are common choices on their respective sides of the metro. It takes a few extra minutes of your time and costs nothing additional.
Winter matters here. Chicago gets lake-effect snow, ice and sub-zero stretches from December through February, and a carrier will not load on an icy grade or a snowed-in street. A clear, level stretch of curb or driveway apron makes the difference between loading that morning and rescheduling.
Ship the car, fly down
Chicago airports and the snowbird pattern
Most seasonal residents on this route do not drive 1,400 miles. They send the vehicle and fly.
Chicago residents fly out of O'Hare (ORD) or Midway (MDW), both of which run nonstop service to Southwest Florida International (RSW) in Fort Myers, with seasonal frequency that builds as the snowbird season does. Chicago Executive in Wheeling, DuPage Airport in West Chicago, Waukegan National and Gary/Chicago International serve private aviation. On the Florida end the arrival airport is almost always RSW, with Punta Gorda (PGD) as the low-cost alternative for Cape Coral and north Lee County.
The practical sequence is simple: hand the vehicle over in the Chicago area a few days before you fly, travel with luggage only, and have the car delivered at or shortly after your arrival. Enterprise Auto Transport does not provide airline or airport transportation - we time the vehicle around your flight, and someone you authorize can release or receive it if your dates do not line up exactly.
If you are arriving at RSW, our RSW airport auto transport page covers the arrivals-side logistics in detail.
Route
Chicago to Southwest Florida auto transport route
The drive is roughly 1,400 road miles to the Naples and Marco Island end of the corridor, a little less to Fort Myers and Cape Coral. Once a carrier has loaded, plan on about four to five days of driving time; the pickup window, not the highway, is the part that varies.
Carriers typically leave Chicago on I-65 through northwest Indiana, pass Indianapolis and Louisville, then run I-75 through Lexington, Knoxville and Chattanooga, cross Atlanta, and take I-75 the length of Florida to the Gulf Coast exits - Fort Myers and Estero off I-75, then Bonita Springs and Naples, with Marco Island the final leg south of Naples. Some drivers route on I-57 through central Illinois and pick up I-24 to Chattanooga instead. We cannot guarantee the exact route any given carrier takes; drivers route around weather, construction and the other vehicles already on the trailer.
Seasonal weather
Chicago winter is the biggest variable on this lane: lake-effect snow, ice and deep-freeze stretches from December through February can close a pickup window, and the Kentucky and Tennessee grades after a winter storm slow the first days south. Florida's summer is the opposite problem - afternoon storms slow the last few hundred miles, and hurricane season can close a delivery window entirely.
Seasonal traffic
Southbound demand out of the Chicago metro builds through October and peaks in November. Northbound out of Southwest Florida peaks in April. In both peaks, pickup windows widen and pricing follows the demand, which is why booking early is worth more than negotiating late.
Both directions
Southbound in fall, northbound in spring
Chicago → Southwest Florida
The heavy direction from mid-October through December. Pick up in the Chicago area before the first hard freeze if you can, keep a two-to-three-day pickup window, and book three to six weeks out. Delivery lands in Naples, Bonita Springs, Estero, Fort Myers, Cape Coral or Marco Island.
Southwest Florida → Chicago
The return half runs March through May, with April the busiest month of the year out of Collier and Lee counties. Booking in February or early March consistently beats calling in April. Delivery back to Chicago is subject to the same street-access planning as pickup - city blocks and high-rises more than suburban streets.
Southwest Florida
Delivering a vehicle on the Gulf Coast
The last mile in Southwest Florida is a different problem from the highway. Gates, guardhouses, tree canopy and community roads decide how a delivery actually goes.
Naples
Collier County, and the densest concentration of private and golf communities on the corridor - Pelican Bay, Grey Oaks, Lely Resort, Fiddler's Creek and the Old Naples streets off 5th Avenue South and Gulf Shore Boulevard. Guard-gated entries, narrow lanes and low canopy are the norm, so most deliveries are staged at or just outside the gate unless the association clears the truck.
Bonita Springs
South Lee County, between Naples and Estero. Bonita Bay, Pelican Landing and Spanish Wells are gated with controlled entries; the Bonita Beach Road and US-41 corridors give a carrier easy staging when a community will not admit the truck.
Estero
Directly off I-75 at Corkscrew Road, which makes it one of the easier stops on the route. West Bay Club, Grandezza and The Brooks are gated; Coconut Point and the Corkscrew commercial frontage are practical meeting points.
Fort Myers
Lee County's hub and the closest major delivery point to RSW. Gateway, Fort Myers' McGregor Boulevard corridor and the Daniels Parkway communities are common; McGregor's banyan canopy is genuinely too low for a full-size open carrier in places.
Cape Coral
A large grid of canal-front residential streets. Access is generally straightforward on the numbered arterials, but many interior streets are narrow with tight cul-de-sacs, and bridge and canal routing can force a meeting point on Del Prado or Pine Island Road.
Marco Island
The last leg south of Naples, reached over the Jolley Bridge on SR-951. Condominium towers and tight island streets mean deliveries are often staged at a larger lot on the island or on the mainland side, agreed before the driver heads over.
Access
Auto transport to gated communities
Most delivery problems on this corridor are access problems, and nearly all of them are avoidable with a phone call before dispatch rather than a negotiation at the gate.
- Gate access and security: many Southwest Florida communities require the resident to add the carrier to a visitor list, and some require a driver's licence check at the guardhouse. We supply the driver and truck details in advance so you can clear them.
- HOA restrictions: a number of associations prohibit commercial vehicles above a certain length or weight, or restrict them to specific hours. Those rules are the association's to enforce and we do not ask a driver to break them.
- Truck size: a loaded open carrier is about 75 feet long and 13 feet 6 inches tall and needs somewhere to stop, unload and leave without reversing blind through a residential street.
- Streets and clearance: narrow lanes, speed tables, roundabouts, low banyan and oak canopy and tight cul-de-sacs are the usual blockers - in Chicago's older neighborhoods and permit-zoned city blocks just as much as in Naples.
- Safe meeting locations: where access is not possible we agree a legal, well-lit nearby spot with room to unload, and the driver calls ahead to confirm timing.
We confirm access before the driver is dispatched. We never guarantee entry into any private community - that decision belongs to the association, not to us. More on gated community delivery

Enterprise Auto Transport is a broker, not a motor carrier. We evaluate carriers and arrange your shipment; a separate, federally licensed trucking company physically moves the vehicle, carries the cargo insurance on it and issues the Bill of Lading. You should always know which carrier has your car.

Snowbird vehicle shipping from Chicago
Scheduling the shipment
Give us your preferred week rather than a single date. A two-to-three-day pickup window is what lets us place your vehicle with a carrier already running the lane instead of paying for a special trip.
Flying instead of driving
Hand the car over before you fly out of O'Hare or Midway, land at RSW or Punta Gorda, and meet the vehicle in Florida. No two-day drive, no hotel, no winter weather on the road.
Seasonal demand
October to December southbound and March to May northbound are the peaks. Booking three to six weeks out in those windows is the single biggest thing you control.
Preparing the vehicle
Quarter tank of fuel or less, wash it so existing damage is visible at inspection, disable toll transponders - the I-PASS included - and alarms, note any leaks, and remove the garage remote and parking passes.
Personal items
Carriers are licensed to haul vehicles, not household goods, and personal items are not covered by cargo insurance. Follow our existing policy for what may stay in the vehicle, and ask us before assuming anything else can travel.
Delivery day
The driver calls ahead to confirm timing and access. You or an authorized person inspects the vehicle against the bill of lading before signing, in daylight wherever possible.

How we work
What happens before your vehicle is loaded
Carrier and insurance verification
We check active USDOT and MC operating authority and safety history, and obtain a certificate of insurance issued by the insurer rather than forwarded by the driver, before a carrier is assigned to your vehicle. How we verify carriers
Inspection and bill of lading
Condition is documented and signed at pickup and again at delivery. Keep your copy - the bill of lading is the document that matters if anything is ever disputed. About the bill of lading
Identity and communication
The driver's identity and truck details are confirmed to you before pickup, and you deal with the same owner-operated office from quote to delivery rather than a rotating call centre.
Customer data protection
Your details are used to arrange your shipment. We do not sell or broadcast your information to a bidding pool of brokers. Our privacy-first approach
