How Much Does Your Car Weigh?

Curb weights for every major car and SUV by year, make and model — and exactly why those pounds show up on your shipping quote.

Start here

Why weight matters in auto transport

Every car hauler on the highway operates under one hard number: 80,000 pounds gross vehicle weight — tractor, trailer and cargo combined, set by federal law. The rig itself weighs 45,000 to 50,000 pounds empty. That leaves roughly 30,000 to 35,000 pounds of legal capacity for the vehicles on board, and every pound your car takes is a pound the driver cannot sell to someone else.

That is why a 2,900-pound Civic ships at the base rate on every lane, while a 5,800-pound Suburban costs $150 to $400 more on the same route. Load nine heavy SUVs and the trailer hits its weight ceiling before the deck is even full — the driver is carrying fewer vehicles than the trailer can physically hold, and the load has to pay for the empty slots.

Weight matters in three other ways too. Heavy vehicles stress winches and ramps when they do not run. Heavy, tall vehicles are limited to bottom-deck positions, which are the carrier's most valuable slots. And electric vehicles quietly broke the old assumptions — a compact-looking EV can outweigh a full-size sedan by a thousand pounds.

Compact

Base rate

Under roughly 3,200 lb. The cheapest vehicles to ship — light on the trailer, easy on the ramps, fits any slot.

Standard

Base rate

Roughly 3,200–4,300 lb. Most sedans and crossovers live here. Priced at the going lane rate with no weight adder.

Large / heavy SUV

+$50 to $150

Roughly 4,300–5,500 lb. Full-size sedans and midsize-to-large SUVs. Slight adder on weight-sensitive lanes.

Heavyweight

+$150 to $400

Over roughly 5,500 lb. Full-size truck-based SUVs and large EVs. Weight and footprint both cost the carrier capacity.

What weight actually costs on a quote

Real market ranges added on top of the base lane rate. Weight adders stack with size adders — a long and heavy vehicle pays for both.

Sports & performance cars

Weight varies wildly in this class — a Miata is lighter than a subcompact, while a Hellcat outweighs a midsize SUV. Low ground clearance matters more than weight here.

The EV factor

Electric vehicles changed the math

Before EVs, carriers could guess weight from body style. A compact SUV was about 3,500 pounds, full stop. A battery pack broke that rule — it adds 800 to 1,500 pounds with no change in footprint, so the vehicle looks like a base-rate crossover and weighs like a truck-based SUV.

The practical rule: quote every EV by its actual curb weight, not its size class. A Tesla Model Y at 4,400 lb prices like a Grand Cherokee. A Rivian R1S at nearly 7,000 lb prices like a dually pickup. And a GMC Hummer EV at 8,600 lb is beyond many open carriers entirely and often moves on specialty equipment.

One more EV note: carriers ask that the battery arrive at 30–80% charge, not full and not empty, for safe loading and unloading.

Get a quote that accounts for weight

Our quote form asks for your year, make and model separately — and flags crew cabs, long beds, lifts and oversized tires — so the rate we negotiate with carriers is built on what your vehicle actually weighs, not a generic class guess.

Honest weight in, honest number out. That is how a quote holds from booking to delivery.

  • Check the door jamb sticker for your exact curb weight
  • EVs: quote by weight, not body style
  • Tell us if it runs — inoperable fees scale with weight
  • Remove cargo and accessories before weighing assumptions

FAQ

Vehicle weight questions

Does vehicle weight really change the shipping price?
Yes, once a vehicle gets heavy. Under about 4,300 pounds — every sedan and most compact SUVs — weight rarely changes the rate at all. Past roughly 4,500 pounds, and especially past 5,500, carriers add $50 to $400 because the weight budget of the whole trailer is finite.
Why do carriers care so much about weight?
Federal law caps a loaded truck at 80,000 pounds gross. The tractor and empty trailer already weigh 45,000 to 50,000 pounds, which leaves about 30,000 to 35,000 pounds for cargo. Nine heavy SUVs can consume that entire budget where nine sedans would not come close.
How much more does it cost to ship a heavy SUV than a sedan?
A full-size truck-based SUV like a Tahoe, Expedition or Wagoneer typically runs $150 to $400 over the sedan rate on the same lane. Large EVs like the Rivian R1S or Hummer EV can cost more because of both weight and deck footprint.
Are electric cars heavier to ship?
Yes. A battery pack adds 800 to 1,500 pounds over the gas equivalent. A Tesla Model Y weighs about as much as a Jeep Grand Cherokee, and a Model X weighs as much as a Tahoe. Always quote an EV by its actual weight.
Where do I find my vehicle's exact weight?
On the certification sticker inside the driver's door jamb — look for curb weight or GVWR. Your registration often lists it too. Our tables use manufacturer curb weights rounded to the nearest hundred pounds, but your trim and options can shift the number by several hundred pounds.
Does weight matter more than size?
They work together. Size decides which deck slot a vehicle fits; weight decides how many vehicles the trailer can legally carry. A long, light vehicle (like a classic land-yacht sedan) pays for length. A short, heavy vehicle (like a compact EV) pays for weight.
Does a heavier vehicle cost more if it doesn't run?
Yes. The inoperable fee scales with weight because winching three tons up a shallow ramp is slow and hard on equipment. A non-running full-size SUV can add $300 to $800 over the running rate.
What's the heaviest vehicle you ship on a standard open carrier?
Around 6,500 to 7,000 pounds is the practical ceiling for a standard stinger or 9-car hauler. Beyond that — a Hummer EV, a loaded dually conversion — we move it on a hotshot, step deck or lowboy instead.
