Car shipping between Elmhurst, Illinois and Southwest Florida
Elmhurst sits in DuPage County less than twenty miles west of downtown Chicago, and the City describes itself as particularly well connected to the regional expressway network - I-290, I-294 and I-88 all within reach. For a driver hauling a loaded transporter 1,330 miles to the Gulf Coast, that is the easy half of the job. The interesting half is what happens after the ramp.
Elmhurst is a railroad town in the working sense. The Union Pacific West line runs directly through the community, carrying commuter and freight traffic, with a Metra station serving the city and a separate Canadian National corridor crossing as well. An active rail line through the middle of a city changes how a truck moves across it: some approaches involve an at-grade crossing and the wait that can come with it, and some involve going under the corridor instead. Then, once the driver is off the arterials, he is in a compact downtown or an established residential grid - a very different environment from the large-lot western suburbs a few miles south. Those three things together - expressway access, an active rail corridor, and close-grained streets at the end of it - are what an Elmhurst pickup is actually about.
We are an owner-operated, federally licensed and bonded broker, BBB Accredited with an A+ rating, serving customers since February 2012. We arrange transportation with qualified motor carriers, and our home base is in Naples, at the receiving end of this route. There is no Enterprise Auto Transport office in Elmhurst; the same Naples-based team handles your shipment from quote through delivery.

The Elmhurst end
Collecting a vehicle in Elmhurst
Door-to-door means we ask the carrier to load at your address. Whether that happens at your kerb or a short distance away is decided by the assigned driver, looking at what is actually in front of him against the truck and trailer he is running - not by a policy written in advance.
Three ways onto the Eisenhower
Elmhurst's transportation planning identifies three points of access to I-290 - North York Road, North Avenue and St. Charles Road - with I-88 reached from South York Road and I-294 indirectly through the I-290/North Avenue area. That matters more than it sounds. A driver with one way out of town is at the mercy of whatever is happening on that road; a driver with three is choosing. After loading, the sequence is nearly always the same: work out to York Road or one of the state routes, pick the access point that suits the direction of travel, and the long-haul portion begins within a few minutes.
Whose road is it
The City points out that several of the major roads through Elmhurst are maintained by other agencies - Illinois Routes 83, 56, 64 and 20, along with Grand Avenue and County Line Road. That distinction is a useful shorthand for how a carrier moves. Those routes are the regional layer, built for through traffic and heavy vehicles, and a driver stays on them as long as possible. City streets are the last layer, and they are the ones sized for the people who live on them. The pickup conversation is almost always about that final transition, not about reaching Elmhurst.
An active rail corridor through the middle
The Union Pacific West corridor runs straight through Elmhurst and carries commuter and freight traffic; the Canadian National corridor crosses the city too. Practically, a city divided by an active rail line is a city where cross-town timing is not fully predictable, and a driver planning the last two miles takes that into account. We deliberately publish no train counts or frequencies here - historic planning figures exist, but presenting old numbers as today's conditions would be misleading, and the operational point does not need them. The corridor is active; that is enough to plan around.
Under the tracks, or across them
City planning documents identify two underpasses carrying north–south movement beneath the Union Pacific corridor: Route 83 and Robert Palmer Drive. They are alternatives to waiting at an at-grade crossing, and routing a truck through one rather than queueing at a crossing is an ordinary decision a driver may make on the day. Two things we will not say, because neither is verified: that an underpass poses a clearance problem for a transporter, or that a transporter cannot use one. We publish no clearance heights and we invent no low bridges. This is a traffic-flow story, not a clearance story.
Downtown is its own environment
The compact downtown around York Street, the Metra station, the rail corridor and the First Street and Park Avenue area is a genuinely different proposition from an arterial. Traffic, parked vehicles, busy intersections, rail activity, people on foot, limited kerb space and the turning a long rig needs all sit in a small area at once. That does not mean transporters are barred downtown - there is no such prohibition, and we do not invent one. It means a downtown or near-downtown address is the sort where the driver may prefer to load a short distance away, and where telling us in advance saves time.
A grid, with the usual caveats
The City's sustainability planning describes most Elmhurst neighbourhoods as having a grid street pattern, and a grid is a friend to a long vehicle: straight runs, regular corners, a way through rather than a way in and back out. But navigating a street and stopping on it are different questions. Width, cars parked on both sides, mature parkway trees, school activity, a nearby crossing, roadwork and legal stopping conditions all decide whether the truck loads at your address or a block or two away. The driver makes that call with the equipment he has.
Road construction, railroad work and temporary traffic changes can affect the final approach to an Elmhurst pickup. The assigned carrier uses current road conditions when planning the local approach, which is why we do not print a list of closures here that would be wrong by spring. If loading directly at the residence is not appropriate, you and the driver coordinate a nearby location with sufficient legal and safe access - never a private lot picked off a map, since private property requires the owner's permission.
Ship the car, fly down
Elmhurst airports and the seasonal pattern
Very few people here drive 1,330 miles twice a year. They send the vehicle and fly.
O'Hare is the airport that matters on this route. The City of Elmhurst's own planning material puts it at roughly 15 miles away, close enough that the drive is an errand rather than a journey, and it carries the widest choice of nonstop service to the Gulf Coast. Midway is the other Chicago commercial airport and is a perfectly reasonable alternative if the fare or the schedule favours it, but it is a longer run from Elmhurst and does not need to drive the plan. At the Florida end you are almost always landing at Southwest Florida International (RSW) in Fort Myers, with Punta Gorda (PGD) serving Cape Coral and north Lee County.
The sequence repeats every season: release the vehicle in Elmhurst a few days before you travel, fly with luggage only, and take delivery at or shortly after you land. Enterprise Auto Transport transports the vehicle and nothing else - we do not book airline reservations, provide airport transfers or rides to O'Hare, or arrange parking. We schedule the vehicle around your travel dates, and someone you authorize can release or receive it if the two do not line up. If you are landing at RSW, our RSW airport auto transport page covers that hand-off.
Southwest Florida
Where Elmhurst vehicles are delivered on the Gulf Coast
Southwest Florida is the Gulf Coast service region covering Collier, Lee and Charlotte counties. The cities below are communities inside that region, not separate service areas.
Naples
Collier County, and the most common destination on this lane. Many Naples addresses sit on private streets behind staffed gates, so the access question that gets settled at the Elmhurst end gets settled again at the Florida end.
Bonita Springs
South Lee County, between Naples and Estero. Bonita Bay, Pelican Landing and Spanish Wells are gated; the Bonita Beach Road and US-41 frontage gives a driver simple staging when a community will not admit a carrier.
Estero
Directly off I-75 at Corkscrew Road, one of the quickest stops on the route. The Corkscrew commercial frontage works well as a meeting point for gated addresses nearby.
Fort Myers
Lee County's hub and the nearest major delivery point to RSW. Parts of the McGregor Boulevard banyan canopy are genuinely too low for a full-size open carrier, so those deliveries are often staged close by.
Cape Coral
A very large grid of canal-front residential streets - familiar in shape to an Elmhurst driver, though the interior streets are narrower and many end in tight cul-de-sacs, which can move a delivery out to Del Prado or Pine Island Road.
Marco Island
South of Naples over the Jolley Bridge on SR-951. Condominium towers and tight island streets mean deliveries are frequently staged at a larger agreed location before the driver heads over.
Sanibel Island
Reached over the Sanibel Causeway from Fort Myers. Island roads, the causeway toll and limited turning room mean a full-size carrier often hands off on the mainland side by prior arrangement.

Both directions
Northbound: Southwest Florida back to Elmhurst
The return leg gets the same attention as the trip south. Each spring we arrange transportation from Naples, Bonita Springs, Estero, Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Marco Island and Sanibel back to Elmhurst, with bookings concentrated from March into early May. Northbound is not a footnote on this lane - for many customers it is the half that goes wrong elsewhere, because it is booked late, once the Florida season is already ending and every carrier running north is full.
The access conversation reverses in an interesting way. Southbound, the difficulty is usually the Florida end: a guard gate, an association's rules, an island causeway. Northbound, the difficulty is usually the Elmhurst end: a narrow residential street lined with parked cars, a downtown block with no kerb space, or a delivery that has to be timed around the rail corridor rather than dropped whenever the truck arrives. Spring deliveries also land in construction season, so the driver plans the last two miles against current conditions rather than a fixed route.
The booking mechanics are identical in both directions: same estimate structure, same carrier vetting, same inspection at both ends, same flat brokerage fee disclosed up front. If you want the vehicle waiting in the driveway when you land at O'Hare, say so at booking - that is a scheduling matter, and it is far easier to arrange with notice.
