The Winnetka end

Picking up a vehicle in Winnetka

Winnetka is a compact village of roughly 3.8 square miles with no expressway inside its borders. Pickup planning here is about which streets and which railroad crossings a 75-foot carrier can actually use.

Highway and arterial access

Carriers reach Winnetka from the Edens Expressway (I-94) and the Tri-State (I-294) and come east on Willow Road or Tower Road, the two practical truck routes into the village. Green Bay Road runs north–south alongside the Metra corridor and Skokie Boulevard and Lake Avenue sit just outside the village, which is where most of the staging room is. Sheridan Road, the lakefront route, is scenic rather than practical for a full-size transporter.

Railroad crossings matter here

The Metra Union Pacific North line runs through the middle of Winnetka, and the village streets cross it on separate bridges at Tower, Elm, Pine, Oak, Cherry and Eldorado. The federal bridge inventory gives those crossings very different ratings - Tower Road is the strongest by a wide margin, the Elm Street bridge is currently listed in poor condition, and Pine Street carries a posted weight limit well below the others. A loaded car carrier approaches 40 tons, so an experienced driver crosses where the structure carries it, which is why pickups on the east side are often routed via Tower Road rather than the nearest street.

Neighborhood access

Hubbard Woods, Indian Hill and the blocks west of Green Bay Road generally give a carrier the width and curb radius it needs. The Tree Streets - the compact grid bounded roughly by Pine, Willow, Hibbard and Green Bay - have smaller lots, narrower pavement and steady on-street parking. East of Sheridan Road, the lakefront and ravine streets are the tightest in the village: curving pavement, deep mature canopy below 13 feet 6 inches, and few places to turn a full-size rig around. None of this is a restriction the village imposes on us; it is simply what the street allows on the day.

Alternate meeting points

Where the truck cannot safely reach the door we agree a nearby spot in advance: the commercial frontage along Willow Road near the Edens interchange, Edens Plaza at Lake Avenue and Skokie Boulevard in Wilmette, or a wide lot on Skokie Boulevard or Green Bay Road. Each is a short drive from any Winnetka address, it costs nothing additional, and it is settled before the carrier is dispatched rather than negotiated at your curb.

Winter is a real factor on the North Shore. Lake-effect snow, plow windrows narrowing already-tight streets and ice on the ravine grades east of Sheridan Road all delay loading, and a carrier will not load on an unplowed residential street. Clearing your driveway apron and a stretch of curb is often the difference between loading that morning and rescheduling.

Ship the car, fly down

Winnetka airports and the seasonal pattern

Most North Shore seasonal residents do not drive 1,400 miles. They send the vehicle and fly.

Winnetka residents typically fly from O'Hare International (ORD), about 30 minutes west via Willow Road and I-294, or Chicago Midway (MDW); Chicago Executive Airport (PWK) in Wheeling serves private aviation nearby. On the Florida end the arrival airport is almost always Southwest Florida International (RSW) in Fort Myers, with Punta Gorda (PGD) as the low-cost alternative for Cape Coral and north Lee County. Winnetka's three Metra Union Pacific North stations - Elm Street, Indian Hill and Hubbard Woods - also make it easy to hand over the car and reach the city without it.

The sequence is simple: release the vehicle in Winnetka a few days before you fly, travel with luggage only, and have the car delivered at or shortly after your arrival. Enterprise Auto Transport does not provide airline or airport transportation - we time the vehicle around your flight, and someone you authorize can release or receive it if your dates do not line up exactly. If you are arriving at RSW, our RSW airport auto transport page covers that hand-off in detail.

Southwest Florida

Where Winnetka vehicles are delivered on the Gulf Coast

Southwest Florida is the Gulf Coast service region covering Collier, Lee and Charlotte counties. The cities below are communities inside that region, not separate service areas.

Naples

Collier County, and the densest concentration of private and golf communities on the corridor. Guard-gated entries, narrow lanes and low canopy are normal, so many deliveries are staged at or just outside the gate unless the association clears the truck.

Bonita Springs

South Lee County, between Naples and Estero. Bonita Bay, Pelican Landing and Spanish Wells are gated; the Bonita Beach Road and US-41 corridors give a carrier easy staging when a community will not admit the truck.

Estero

Directly off I-75 at Corkscrew Road, one of the easier stops on the route. Coconut Point and the Corkscrew commercial frontage are practical meeting points for gated addresses.

Fort Myers

Lee County's hub and the closest major delivery point to RSW. The McGregor Boulevard banyan canopy is genuinely too low for a full-size open carrier in places, so deliveries there are often staged nearby.

Cape Coral

A large grid of canal-front residential streets. Arterials are straightforward; many interior streets are narrow with tight cul-de-sacs, which can move a delivery to Del Prado or Pine Island Road.

Marco Island

South of Naples over the Jolley Bridge on SR-951. Condominium towers and tight island streets mean deliveries are often staged at a larger lot, agreed before the driver heads over.

Sanibel Island

Reached over the Sanibel Causeway from Fort Myers. Island roads, the causeway toll and limited turning room mean a full-size carrier frequently hands off on the mainland side by prior arrangement.

Both directions

Northbound: Southwest Florida back to Winnetka

This corridor is a two-way service. Enterprise Auto Transport arranges northbound vehicle transportation from Naples, Bonita Springs, Estero, Fort Myers, Cape Coral and the rest of Southwest Florida back to Winnetka and the neighbouring North Shore communities each spring. Northbound demand concentrates in March, April and early May, and the same access questions apply in reverse - the Florida gate on the way out, and the Winnetka street on the way in.

Questions

Winnetka to Southwest Florida, answered

Who ships cars from Winnetka, Illinois to Naples, Florida?
Enterprise Auto Transport. We are an owner-operated, federally licensed and bonded auto transport broker (USDOT #2273104, MC #774106), BBB Accredited with an A+ rating, serving customers since 2012, and based at the Southwest Florida end of this route. We are not the trucking company - we place your vehicle with a qualified, insurance-verified motor carrier and stay with the shipment from pickup in Winnetka to delivery in Naples.
Does Enterprise Auto Transport ship cars from Winnetka to Southwest Florida?
Yes. We arrange vehicle transportation between Winnetka and the Southwest Florida region, including Naples, Bonita Springs, Estero, Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Marco Island, Sanibel Island. Southwest Florida is a region, and those cities are communities inside it, so a single Winnetka shipment can be delivered to any of them.
Does Enterprise Auto Transport ship vehicles back from Florida to Winnetka?
Yes - both directions. Southbound runs mostly from October through December - northbound from Southwest Florida back to Winnetka and the rest of the North Shore runs mostly from March through early May. The northbound trip is booked exactly the same way as the southbound one.
Can I ship my car from Winnetka to Florida and fly down?
Yes, and that is what most North Shore seasonal residents do. The vehicle is collected in Winnetka a few days before you travel, you fly from O'Hare or Midway to Southwest Florida International (RSW) in Fort Myers or Punta Gorda (PGD), and the car is delivered at or shortly after your arrival. We do not provide flights or airport transportation - we time the vehicle around them.
Can my vehicle be picked up at my Winnetka residence?
In most cases, yes. Door-to-door pickup is the default, and the final loading spot depends on whether a full-size carrier - roughly 75 feet long and 13 feet 6 inches tall - can reach, stop and leave your street safely and legally. Wider streets west of Green Bay Road and in the Hubbard Woods and Indian Hill areas usually work - some narrow lakefront and ravine streets off Sheridan Road do not.
What happens if the auto carrier cannot access my street?
We agree a nearby meeting point before the driver is dispatched, not on pickup day. On the North Shore that is usually a large commercial lot a few minutes away - the Willow Road corridor near the Edens interchange, Edens Plaza in Wilmette, or a wide commercial frontage on Green Bay Road or Skokie Boulevard. There is no additional charge for meeting nearby.
Do Winnetka's railroad bridges affect a loaded car carrier?
They can. Winnetka's Metra Union Pacific North tracks run through the middle of the village and the road bridges over them carry different posted and inventory ratings in the federal bridge inventory - Tower Road is the strongest crossing, while several of the downtown street bridges are rated far lower and the Elm Street bridge is currently listed in poor condition. A fully loaded transporter weighs close to 40 tons, so the driver routes across the crossing that carries it rather than the nearest one.
Can my vehicle be delivered to a gated community in Naples?
Often, yes, provided the association permits commercial vehicle access and the driver is cleared with the gate or guardhouse in advance. Some Southwest Florida communities do not allow transport trucks at all. We confirm the rules before dispatch and arrange a nearby delivery point when access is not permitted; we never promise entry into a private community.
When should seasonal residents arrange vehicle transportation?
Three to six weeks ahead for a southbound move between mid-October and December, and for a northbound move in March, April or early May. Those are the two peak windows on the Chicagoland corridor. Outside them, one to two weeks of notice is usually enough.
Should I use open or enclosed auto transport from Winnetka?
Open transport suits most daily-driven sedans, SUVs and trucks and is what the majority of these shipments use. Enclosed transport is worth the premium for collector, exotic, classic, low-clearance and high-value vehicles - and because enclosed trailers are shorter, they frequently reach narrow North Shore streets that a ten-car open carrier cannot.
How does Enterprise Auto Transport verify the carrier?
Before dispatch we check the carrier's active USDOT and MC operating authority and safety record, and obtain a certificate of insurance issued directly by the insurer rather than forwarded by the driver. Vehicle condition is documented and signed at pickup and again at delivery on the bill of lading.
