Metro Detroit ships more boats per capita than almost any market we work. Lake St. Clair, the Detroit River and the Huron shoreline put a lot of freshwater hulls within an hour of the same set of storage yards, and a good share of them head south for the winter.

A Great Lakes boat has spent the season in fresh water, which means winterizing is about freeze protection rather than salt flushing. If the route runs through cold weather before it reaches Florida, water left anywhere in the system is the risk — not corrosion.
Storage yards cluster outside the city
Macomb, Oakland and Monroe County yards hold most of the region's stored boats and RVs. Those are easy carrier pickups. Pickups inside Detroit neighborhoods are more variable and often become a meeting point.
Two-season equipment ownership is common
Many Michigan owners keep a fishing boat here and a smaller runabout or pontoon in Florida. If you are weighing that against annual shipping, price two seasonal moves against the cost of a second boat and its Florida storage.

The dominant category. Trailers are common, which makes tow-away the usual method — as long as the bearings have actually been serviced.
Cruisers and larger runabouts
Lake St. Clair boats often exceed 8'6" of beam, which puts them into permit territory. Measure the widest point.
Travel trailers and motorhomes
Stored outdoors through Michigan winters. Tire date codes and roof seals are the two things to check before a long southbound run.
Motorcycles
Strong volume, and a market where owners tend to be particular about how the bike is strapped. Soft ties and a wheel chock, never chains over the frame.
Jet skis
Usually on a single or double PWC trailer. Drain the hull fully — spring northbound trips freeze whatever is left in it.

Seasonal timing and local access
Timing
- Fall southbound demand builds through September and peaks in October, matching haul-out season on Lake St. Clair.
- Spring northbound runs March through May; Michigan owners often want equipment back before Memorial Day weekend.
- Book six weeks out if your unit is oversize or needs permits — that is a smaller pool of trucks than a standard tow-away.
- Winterize before pickup, not after. A carrier is not going to do it for you and a freeze on the road is your loss.
Pickup considerations
- Suburban subdivisions in Grosse Pointe, Rochester Hills and similar areas often have restrictions on commercial vehicles and overnight staging.
- Marina yards typically require a signed release and specific hours for equipment pickup.
- Winter freeze-thaw makes some unpaved storage lots impassable to a loaded tractor. Confirm surface conditions for a late-season date.
- If your trailer wintered outdoors, assume bearings and tires need attention before it is a tow-away candidate.

Do I need to winterize before shipping south?
Yes, if the trip starts in cold weather. Water in the bilge, engine or plumbing is what causes freeze damage in transit, and it is on the owner to handle before pickup.
My boat is over 8 feet 6 inches wide — can it still be towed?
Usually, with permits and sometimes daylight-only travel or escorts. It costs more and needs more lead time, so tell us the true beam at quote time.
Can you pick up from my storage yard when I am not there?
Yes, with a written release to the facility. You will still want photos taken at pickup, so arrange for someone to walk the unit with the driver if you can.
How does an old trailer affect my quote?
It can change the method entirely. If the trailer cannot safely make the trip, the load goes on a flatbed, which costs more than towing it.
