RV Transport

Towable and drivable RVs, moved by tow-away or by driver.

Overview

How rv transport works

"RV" covers everything from a 19-foot travel trailer to a 45-foot diesel pusher, and those two do not move the same way. The first is towed behind a carrier's truck. The second is normally driven by a qualified driver, or loaded onto heavy equipment if it does not run.

The right answer depends on length, height, weight, hitch type, whether the unit runs and whether the destination can physically take it. We work all of that out before quoting, because an RV quote built on guesses falls apart at pickup.

Tow-away for towables

Travel trailers, fifth wheels and toy haulers are hooked to a carrier's truck with the correct hitch — a ball, a gooseneck or a fifth-wheel plate — and towed. The unit's own frame, axles, tires and brakes carry it the whole way, so their condition is the whole ballgame.

Driven transport for motorhomes

Class A, B and C motorhomes that run and are insured are commonly driven by a licensed driver. It is efficient, but it adds mileage and hours to the coach, so know that going in.

Non-running or unregistered units

If it does not run or cannot legally be on the road, it moves on heavy equipment, which is a different and more expensive class of transport. Say so up front — it is the single most common thing people leave out.

Quoting

What we need to quote your shipment

  • Type: travel trailer, fifth wheel, toy hauler, Class A/B/C
  • Exact length, width and height at the tallest point (A/C units, satellite domes, vents)
  • Dry weight and GVWR
  • Hitch type and pin box height for towables
  • Running condition, current registration and insurance for drivable units
  • Tire age and brake condition
  • Pickup and delivery access: storage lot, RV park, driveway, or gated community

Enterprise Auto Transport is a licensed broker (USDOT #2273104, MC #774106). We arrange transportation with qualified motor carriers whose equipment and authority fit the shipment — we do not own trucks or employ drivers.

Before pickup

  • Empty fresh, gray and black tanks completely
  • Retract and lock slide-outs, awnings, steps and antennas
  • Latch and lock every exterior compartment
  • Secure interior cabinets, the fridge door and anything on a countertop
  • Turn off propane and close the valves
  • Check tire pressure cold, and note the DOT date codes
  • Remove and store valuables; personal items are not covered by cargo insurance
  • Photograph the roof, sidewalls, undercarriage and every corner

From experience

What commonly goes wrong

  • RV tires age out around five to seven years regardless of tread. Snowbird routes are long and hot.
  • Roof damage from an unnoticed low branch at home shows up as a water claim in Florida. Photograph the roof before pickup.
  • Many RV parks will not allow a tractor-trailer down interior roads. Expect to meet the carrier at the entrance or a nearby lot.

Questions

RV Transport FAQs

Do I need insurance on the RV during transport?

The carrier's cargo policy covers the shipment, but keep your own policy active as secondary coverage. That is standard advice for anything valuable in transit.

Can you move my RV with my car at the same time?

They are two different shipments and usually two different carriers, but we routinely coordinate the timing so they arrive in the same window.

How far ahead should I book?

For October–December arrivals in the south and March–May departures north, three to six weeks ahead is realistic. Those are the two weeks-long crunches in this business.

Condition and repair responsibility

Tires, brakes and anything that rolls: the owner's responsibility

  • Anything that rolls or tows on its own wheels — boats, RVs, campers, utility and enclosed trailers, equipment trailers — must be roadworthy before pickup. That means sound tires with tread and no dry rot, correct air pressure, working bearings and hubs, functioning brakes and lights, a good coupler, safety chains and a spare if one is available.
  • Equipment that has been parked for a long season is the most common problem. Tires that look fine can be dry-rotted and years past their date code, and bearings that have not been greased will run hot. If your boat or trailer has been sitting, have the tires and bearings checked before transport.
  • The customer is responsible for the cost of any repairs needed to make the unit safe to move — tires, wheels, bearings, brakes, lights, couplers or anything else that allows the unit to roll or operate.
  • If a tire blows out, a bearing fails or the unit becomes disabled in transit, the customer is responsible for the cost of towing to the nearest service facility and for the parts and labor to repair it. Roadside service on the highway costs considerably more than doing the work in advance.
  • Repairs made on the road can add days to the delivery window. Enterprise Auto Transport is a licensed broker and is not responsible for the mechanical condition of the equipment, for the cost of repairs or towing, or for delays caused by them.

Not sure what kind of hauler you need?

Don't worry. You don't have to know whether you need a power-only truck, flatbed, enclosed trailer, RV driver or specialized carrier. Just tell us what you're moving, its approximate size, where it's going and when you need it moved. We'll review the shipment and determine what type of transportation is appropriate.

Please note: Anything that rolls on its own wheels must be roadworthy before pickup. The customer is responsible for repairs — tires, bearings, brakes, lights — and for towing and repair costs if the unit becomes disabled in transit.
