Tow-Away Transport
A carrier hooks to your trailer and tows it to the destination.
Overview
How tow-away transport works
Tow-away is the plain-English version of the same service: a qualified carrier arrives with a truck, hooks to your trailer, and tows it to the destination. Nothing is lifted, nothing is loaded, and your equipment travels on its own wheels.
It is the method behind most seasonal boat, RV and utility trailer moves. It also has the strictest pre-trip standard of any recreational transport, because the trailer is doing the work.
The pickup inspection
Expect the driver to check tires and DOT dates, spin and feel the hubs, test lights, look at the frame and welds, verify the coupler and chains, and confirm brake function. This inspection is the difference between a delivered trailer and a breakdown call.
Hitch matching
Ball size, gooseneck, fifth-wheel plate and pintle are not interchangeable. Reporting yours accurately at quote time is what keeps the right truck coming to your address.
When it becomes a haul instead
If the trailer fails inspection or was never road-legal, the shipment converts to a flatbed haul. That costs more and takes different equipment, which is why we would rather find out at quote time than at your driveway.
Quoting
What we need to quote your shipment
- What is being towed and its overall dimensions
- Weight, loaded and empty
- Hitch or coupler type
- Brake type and condition
- Tire age and spare availability
- Registration status
- Pickup and delivery access, including gate codes or park rules
Enterprise Auto Transport is a licensed broker (USDOT #2273104, MC #774106). We arrange transportation with qualified motor carriers whose equipment and authority fit the shipment — we do not own trucks or employ drivers.
Before pickup
- Service the bearings and check the hubs for heat or play
- Replace aged tires and carry a mounted spare
- Confirm lights and the breakaway system work
- Secure everything on and inside the trailer
- Clear the path — the truck needs room to back in and swing out
- Be present, walk the unit with the driver and sign an accurate bill of lading
From experience
What commonly goes wrong
- Bearings are the most common tow-away failure by a wide margin.
- Narrow residential streets and low-hanging branches often force a meeting point nearby instead of a driveway hookup.
- A trailer that has sat two winters is a service job first and a shipment second.
Questions
Tow-Away Transport FAQs
What if the driver says my trailer is unsafe?
The move pauses and we re-plan — either you repair it, or we convert to a hauled shipment. A driver refusing a bad trailer is doing their job.
Can you tow from a storage facility?
Yes, and it is often easier than a house. You will need to authorize the facility to release the unit and provide gate access.
Before pickup
Condition and repair responsibility
Tires, brakes and anything that rolls: the owner's responsibility
- Anything that rolls or tows on its own wheels — boats, RVs, campers, utility and enclosed trailers, equipment trailers — must be roadworthy before pickup. That means sound tires with tread and no dry rot, correct air pressure, working bearings and hubs, functioning brakes and lights, a good coupler, safety chains and a spare if one is available.
- Equipment that has been parked for a long season is the most common problem. Tires that look fine can be dry-rotted and years past their date code, and bearings that have not been greased will run hot. If your boat or trailer has been sitting, have the tires and bearings checked before transport.
- The customer is responsible for the cost of any repairs needed to make the unit safe to move — tires, wheels, bearings, brakes, lights, couplers or anything else that allows the unit to roll or operate.
- If a tire blows out, a bearing fails or the unit becomes disabled in transit, the customer is responsible for the cost of towing to the nearest service facility and for the parts and labor to repair it. Roadside service on the highway costs considerably more than doing the work in advance.
- Repairs made on the road can add days to the delivery window. Enterprise Auto Transport is a licensed broker and is not responsible for the mechanical condition of the equipment, for the cost of repairs or towing, or for delays caused by them.

Not sure what kind of hauler you need?
Don't worry. You don't have to know whether you need a power-only truck, flatbed, enclosed trailer, RV driver or specialized carrier. Just tell us what you're moving, its approximate size, where it's going and when you need it moved. We'll review the shipment and determine what type of transportation is appropriate.
Please note: Anything that rolls on its own wheels must be roadworthy before pickup. The customer is responsible for repairs — tires, bearings, brakes, lights — and for towing and repair costs if the unit becomes disabled in transit.
