SWFL Newcomer Guide
Beaches & parking permits
Two counties, three permit systems and a state park fee that ignores all of them. Here is how beach access actually works between Punta Gorda and Marco Island.
Permits
Who gives you what
Collier County — free resident sticker
Proof of residency gets you a free beach parking permit, available at the Tax Collector's main office on Tamiami Trail East and at community park locations including East Naples, Golden Gate, Eagle Lakes, Big Corkscrew Island and Freedom Park. Covers county lots and garages such as Vanderbilt Beach and Clam Pass.
Lee County — paid annual permit
Lee County beach lots are paid parking. Residents can buy an annual permit that covers county beach lots including Bonita Beach Park and Lee County accesses on Fort Myers Beach. Visitors pay by the hour, usually through a parking app.
Florida State Parks — separate fee
Delnor-Wiggins Pass, Lovers Key, Cayo Costa and Gasparilla Island charge a per-vehicle entrance fee. An annual state park pass is the cheaper route if you visit more than a handful of times a year.
Cities layer their own rules on top: Naples meters its beach-end street parking downtown, Marco Island runs a resident program alongside the Civic Association's Residents' Beach, and Sanibel charges by the hour at its public lots on top of the causeway toll.
Practical
Getting a spot in season
- Arrive before 9:30am January through March, or after 3pm for the better light and an emptier lot.
- Barefoot Beach Preserve and Delnor-Wiggins close their gates when full — do not plan around them on a Saturday.
- The Vanderbilt Beach garage is the most reliable covered parking in Naples and free with the county permit.
- Blind Pass and Turner Beach lots on Sanibel/Captiva are tiny and turn over quickly on a falling tide.
- Fort Myers Beach parking is still evolving as post-Ian rebuilding continues; check the lot before you drive out.
- Beach-end metered spots in Old Naples are enforced aggressively — pay the meter even for a short walk.
