Registering your car in Florida

Title, plate, VIN verification and insurance — what new residents in Collier, Lee and Charlotte counties actually have to do, and in what order.

The short version

Do these five things in this order

  1. 1. Bind Florida insurance first

    Florida requires $10,000 PIP and $10,000 Property Damage Liability from a Florida-licensed carrier. The tag office will verify it electronically. Your out-of-state policy will not work.

  2. 2. Get the VIN and odometer verified (HSMV 82042)

    Any out-of-state vehicle needs this. Bring the car to the tag office and they will handle it, or have a Florida notary, dealer or law-enforcement officer sign the form.

  3. 3. Bring the original title

    If a lender holds it, you will complete a title-transfer request and the county will pursue the lienholder. Start this early — it is the single most common delay.

  4. 4. Get a Florida driver license

    New residents are expected to convert their license promptly. Bring proof of identity, Social Security number and two proofs of Florida address (REAL ID standard).

  5. 5. Pay title, plate and the one-time initial registration fee

    Expect the title fee, the annual registration based on vehicle weight, and the one-time initial registration fee (commonly $225) the first time a plate is issued to you in Florida.

  • Valid photo ID for every owner listed on the title
  • Proof of Florida address — lease, deed, utility bill or bank statement

Collier County

Collier County Tax Collector — main office at the Government Complex on Tamiami Trail East in Naples, plus North Collier, Golden Gate, Immokalee and Marco Island branches. Appointments strongly recommended in season.

Lee County

Lee County Tax Collector — offices in Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Bonita Springs, Lehigh Acres and North Fort Myers. Online appointment scheduling is the norm.

Charlotte County

Charlotte County Tax Collector — Punta Gorda, Port Charlotte and Englewood locations serving Charlotte Harbor residents.

January through March is the busiest stretch of the year at every SWFL tag office. If your move is flexible, handling registration in the shoulder season saves real time.

Timing

How this interacts with shipping the car

The paperwork clock starts when you establish residency, not when the car arrives — which is why the shipping date matters.

  • Ship the vehicle so it lands within the same week you plan to visit the tag office; the VIN verification is far simpler with the car in front of you.
  • Snowbird arrivals in October–December and departures in March–May are the tightest dispatch windows of the year — three to six weeks of lead time is realistic.
  • Keep your out-of-state registration valid until the Florida plate is in hand; do not surrender the old plate before you have to.
  • Photograph the odometer at pickup and delivery. It settles both the transport record and the HSMV 82042 reading.
  • Turn off or remove your toll transponder before the car ships. It reads from a carrier's windshield line and bills you for crossings you never made.

How long do I have to register my car after moving to Florida?
Once you establish Florida residency you are expected to title and register your vehicle promptly — Collier County's Tax Collector states 10 days. Establishing residency includes things like enrolling a child in school, accepting employment, or filing for homestead exemption.
What is the $225 initial registration fee?
Florida charges a one-time initial registration fee (commonly $225) the first time a license plate is issued to an owner in the state. It does not apply if you are transferring a plate you already hold in Florida.
Do I need a VIN verification?
Yes. An out-of-state vehicle needs its VIN and odometer verified on Form HSMV 82042. A Florida notary, a licensed dealer, a law enforcement officer or a tax collector employee can complete it — most people just bring the car to the tag office.
What insurance does Florida require?
