The Pittsburgh end

Picking up a vehicle in Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh pickup planning comes down to topography. The rivers, the hills and the bridges decide where a carrier can realistically load.

Highway access

I-79 is the southbound corridor - it runs straight from the North Hills through the city's western side toward Washington, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. I-376 (the Parkway) links the eastern suburbs and the airport to the Turnpike (I-76), and US-22 crosses west of the city. A pickup in Cranberry Township or Wexford puts the truck on I-79 within minutes; a pickup in Monroeville hands the driver the Turnpike. The city's own river crossings - the Fort Pitt, Fort Duquesne and Liberty bridges and their tunnels - carry height, weight and hazmat restrictions that keep big trucks on the ring highways instead.

Hills, older blocks and the suburbs

Pittsburgh proper is a city of slopes and river terraces: Mount Washington and the South Side Slopes rise in grades no carrier wants to back down, and the older East End neighborhoods - Shadyside, Squirrel Hill, Oakland, Bloomfield, Lawrenceville - combine narrow one-way blocks, tight corners and parked cars on both sides. The suburbs are the opposite: Cranberry Township, Wexford, McCandless, Sewickley, Upper St. Clair, Peters Township, Bethel Park and Monroeville have driveways and subdivision streets a ten-car carrier can work on. Steep driveways on hillside lots are the one suburban issue - loading on the street below is the usual answer.

Gated and private communities

Western Pennsylvania has far fewer gated developments than Southwest Florida - this is not a guardhouse region. What exists is mostly country-club and estate neighborhoods in the Sewickley valley, the North Hills and Washington County, with private lanes, older tree canopy and limited turnaround room. Association rules in those communities are checked before dispatch rather than tested at the entrance.

Alternate meeting points

When a truck cannot safely reach the door, we agree a nearby location in advance - the Ross Park Mall district on McKnight Road, the Cranberry Township commercial corridor along Route 228, The Mall at Robinson, Monroeville Mall or South Hills Village are common choices on their respective sides of the metro. It takes a few extra minutes of your time and costs nothing additional.

Winter matters here for a topographic reason. Pittsburgh's streets freeze in shaded hollows and bridge decks ice before roadways, and a loaded transporter will not work a snowed-in hillside street. Southbound pickups scheduled ahead of the first hard freeze go smoothly; pickups rescheduled from inside a storm week do not.

Ship the car, fly down

Pittsburgh airports and the snowbird pattern

Many Pittsburgh-area seasonal residents do not drive 1,150 miles. They send the vehicle and fly.

Pittsburgh residents fly out of Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) in Moon Township, whose winter schedules have included seasonal nonstop service to Southwest Florida International (RSW) in Fort Myers. Allegheny County Airport (AGC) in West Mifflin and Butler County Regional (BTP) handle private aviation for the region.

The practical sequence is simple: hand the vehicle over in the Pittsburgh area a few days before you fly, travel with luggage only, and have the car delivered at or shortly after your arrival. Enterprise Auto Transport does not provide airline or airport transportation - we time the vehicle around your flight, and someone you authorize can release or receive it if your dates do not line up exactly.

If you are arriving at RSW, our RSW airport auto transport page covers the arrivals-side logistics in detail.

Route

Pittsburgh to Southwest Florida auto transport route

The drive is roughly 1,150 road miles to the Naples and Marco Island end of the corridor, a little less to Fort Myers and Cape Coral. Once a carrier has loaded, plan on about three to four days of driving time; the pickup window, not the highway, is the part that varies.

This is the mountain lane, and it skips the crowded Northeast corridor entirely: I-79 south through Washington, Pennsylvania and into West Virginia, where I-77 joins the same highway through Charleston and the West Virginia mountains - including the Big Walker and East River Mountain tunnels - and down toward Charlotte. From there carriers either take I-85 to Atlanta and I-75 south, or run I-26 through Columbia to I-95 and come up the Georgia coast into Florida. The usual Florida finish is I-75 south to the Fort Myers, Estero and Naples exits, with Bonita Springs and Marco Island the final legs. We cannot guarantee the exact route any given carrier takes; drivers route around weather, construction and the other vehicles already on the trailer.

Seasonal weather

Southbound, the risks are western Pennsylvania snow and the West Virginia mountain passes - grades, fog and ice that close or slow the corridor through the mountains from November through March. Florida's afternoon storms and hurricane season affect the rest of the run, and hurricane evacuations can close a delivery window entirely.

Seasonal traffic

Southbound demand out of western Pennsylvania builds through October and peaks before the holidays; northbound out of Southwest Florida peaks in April. In both peaks, pickup windows widen and pricing follows the demand, which is why booking early is worth more than negotiating late.

Both directions

Southbound in fall, northbound in spring

Pittsburgh → Southwest Florida

The heavy direction from October through December. Pick up in the Pittsburgh area before the first hard freeze if you can, keep a two-to-three-day pickup window, and book three to six weeks out. Delivery lands in Naples, Bonita Springs, Estero, Fort Myers, Cape Coral or Marco Island.

Southwest Florida → Pittsburgh

The return half runs March through May, with April the busiest month of the year out of Collier and Lee counties. Booking in February or early March consistently beats calling in April. Delivery back to the Pittsburgh area is subject to the same topography as pickup - hillside streets, bridge weight limits and western Pennsylvania's late-season snow.

Southwest Florida

Delivering a vehicle on the Gulf Coast

The last mile in Southwest Florida is a different problem from the highway. Gates, guardhouses, tree canopy and community roads decide how a delivery actually goes.

Naples

Collier County, and the densest concentration of private and golf communities on the corridor - Pelican Bay, Grey Oaks, Lely Resort, Fiddler's Creek and the Old Naples streets off 5th Avenue South and Gulf Shore Boulevard. Guard-gated entries, narrow lanes and low canopy are the norm, so most deliveries are staged at or just outside the gate unless the association clears the truck.

Bonita Springs

South Lee County, between Naples and Estero. Bonita Bay, Pelican Landing and Spanish Wells are gated with controlled entries; the Bonita Beach Road and US-41 corridors give a carrier easy staging when a community will not admit the truck.

Estero

Directly off I-75 at Corkscrew Road, which makes it one of the easier stops on the route. West Bay Club, Grandezza and The Brooks are gated; Coconut Point and the Corkscrew commercial frontage are practical meeting points.

Fort Myers

Lee County's hub and the closest major delivery point to RSW. Gateway, Fort Myers' McGregor Boulevard corridor and the Daniels Parkway communities are common; McGregor's banyan canopy is genuinely too low for a full-size open carrier in places.

Cape Coral

A large grid of canal-front residential streets. Access is generally straightforward on the numbered arterials, but many interior streets are narrow with tight cul-de-sacs, and bridge and canal routing can force a meeting point on Del Prado or Pine Island Road.

Marco Island

The last leg south of Naples, reached over the Jolley Bridge on SR-951. Condominium towers and tight island streets mean deliveries are often staged at a larger lot on the island or on the mainland side, agreed before the driver heads over.

Access

Auto transport to gated communities

Most delivery problems on this corridor are access problems, and nearly all of them are avoidable with a phone call before dispatch rather than a negotiation at the gate.

  • Gate access and security: many Southwest Florida communities require the resident to add the carrier to a visitor list, and some require a driver's licence check at the guardhouse. We supply the driver and truck details in advance so you can clear them.
  • HOA restrictions: a number of associations prohibit commercial vehicles above a certain length or weight, or restrict them to specific hours. Those rules are the association's to enforce and we do not ask a driver to break them.
  • Truck size: a loaded open carrier is about 75 feet long and 13 feet 6 inches tall and needs somewhere to stop, unload and leave without reversing blind through a residential street.
  • Streets and clearance: narrow lanes, speed tables, roundabouts, low banyan and oak canopy and tight cul-de-sacs are the usual blockers - in Pittsburgh's East End and hillside streets just as much as in Naples.
  • Safe meeting locations: where access is not possible we agree a legal, well-lit nearby spot with room to unload, and the driver calls ahead to confirm timing.

We confirm access before the driver is dispatched. We never guarantee entry into any private community - that decision belongs to the association, not to us. More on gated community delivery

How we verify carriers · Fraud prevention centre · Broker vs. carrier explained

Seasonal residents

Snowbird vehicle shipping from Pittsburgh

Scheduling the shipment

Give us your preferred week rather than a single date. A two-to-three-day pickup window is what lets us place your vehicle with a carrier already running the lane instead of paying for a special trip.

Flying instead of driving

Hand the car over before you fly out of Pittsburgh International, land at RSW, and meet the vehicle in Florida. No 1,150-mile drive, no West Virginia mountain passes in a snowstorm, no I-75 beach traffic.

Seasonal demand

October to December southbound and March to May northbound are the peaks. Booking three to six weeks out in those windows is the single biggest thing you control.

Preparing the vehicle

Quarter tank of fuel or less, wash it so existing damage is visible at inspection, disable toll transponders and alarms, note any leaks, and remove the garage remote and parking permits.

Personal items

Carriers are licensed to haul vehicles, not household goods, and personal items are not covered by cargo insurance. Follow our existing policy for what may stay in the vehicle, and ask us before assuming anything else can travel.

Delivery day

The driver calls ahead to confirm timing and access. You or an authorized person inspects the vehicle against the bill of lading before signing, in daylight wherever possible.

Planning the whole season? Snowbird Transportation Center and the 12-month shipping calendar cover timing in more depth, and open versus enclosed transport explains which trailer suits your vehicle.

How we work

What happens before your vehicle is loaded

Carrier and insurance verification

We check active USDOT and MC operating authority and safety history, and obtain a certificate of insurance issued by the insurer rather than forwarded by the driver, before a carrier is assigned to your vehicle. How we verify carriers

Inspection and bill of lading

Condition is documented and signed at pickup and again at delivery. Keep your copy - the bill of lading is the document that matters if anything is ever disputed. About the bill of lading

Identity and communication

The driver's identity and truck details are confirmed to you before pickup, and you deal with the same owner-operated office from quote to delivery rather than a rotating call centre.

Questions

Pittsburgh to Southwest Florida, answered

Who ships cars from Pittsburgh to Naples?
Enterprise Auto Transport arranges vehicle transportation from Pittsburgh and western Pennsylvania to Naples and the rest of Southwest Florida. We are an owner-operated, federally licensed and bonded auto transport broker (USDOT #2273104, MC #774106), BBB Accredited with an A+ rating, and based at the Florida end of this route. We are not the trucking company; we place your vehicle with a qualified, insurance-verified motor carrier and stay with the shipment from pickup to delivery.
Can I ship my car to Florida and fly down?
Yes, and that is how many Pittsburgh-area seasonal residents do it. Your vehicle is picked up at your home, you fly out of Pittsburgh International (PIT) - whose winter schedules have included seasonal nonstop service to Southwest Florida International (RSW) in Fort Myers - and the car is delivered after you arrive. Allegheny County Airport (AGC) in West Mifflin and Butler County Regional (BTP) serve private aviation. We do not provide airline or airport transportation - we simply time the vehicle so it reaches you near your arrival date.
When should Pittsburgh snowbirds schedule car shipping to Florida?
Book three to six weeks ahead for a southbound move between October and December, and for a northbound move in April or early May. Those are the two peak windows on this corridor - western Pennsylvania sends vehicles south before the first serious snow, and Pittsburgh's hillside streets become difficult for a loaded carrier well before the calendar reaches midwinter. Outside the peaks, one to two weeks of notice is usually enough.
Can an auto transporter pick up inside my Pittsburgh neighborhood?
In the suburbs, usually yes. The North Hills - Cranberry Township, Wexford, McCandless - the South Hills - Upper St. Clair, Peters Township, Bethel Park - and eastern communities such as Monroeville have driveways and subdivision streets a full-size carrier can work on, with fast access to I-79, I-376 or the Turnpike. In the city proper, the older hillside and East End neighborhoods - Mount Washington and the Slopes, Shadyside, Squirrel Hill, Oakland, Bloomfield - have steep grades, narrow one-way blocks and bridge approaches that make curbside loading impractical, so a nearby meeting point is normally the plan there. We confirm this before dispatch, not on pickup day.
Can you deliver a vehicle to a gated community in Naples?
In many cases yes, provided the community allows commercial vehicle access and you clear the driver with the gate or guardhouse in advance. Some Southwest Florida communities restrict transport trucks entirely. We never guarantee access to a private community; we confirm the rules first and arrange a nearby alternative when access is not permitted.
What happens if the carrier cannot enter my community?
We coordinate a safe, legal meeting point close by - commonly a large retail lot, a wide commercial frontage road or a community entrance with room to stage. There is no extra charge for meeting nearby, and it is agreed in advance rather than improvised at the gate.
Is open or enclosed transport better for this trip?
Open transport is the right choice for most daily-driven sedans, SUVs and trucks, and it is what the majority of Pittsburgh to Southwest Florida shipments use. Enclosed transport is worth the premium for exotic, classic, collector, low-clearance and high-value vehicles, and enclosed trailers are smaller, so they can often reach entrances a ten-car open carrier cannot.
How does Enterprise Auto Transport verify the carrier transporting my vehicle?
Before dispatch we check the carrier's active USDOT and MC authority, current safety record, and a certificate of insurance issued directly by the insurer rather than forwarded by the driver. Condition is documented with a signed bill of lading and inspection at pickup and again at delivery.
