Auto Transport Insurance

Navigating Auto Transport Insurance for Your Vehicle's Protection

Do you need insurance to ship a car?

If you are not the one driving it, you may not need to have your own car insurance to transport a vehicle by truck, ship, or rail. You may want to choose a car hauler with adequate insurance to cover any damages that occur to your car in the moving process. Yet, if there's an issue with your auto transport insurance, having comprehensive and collision on your auto policy could save you. They'd save you from responsibility for damage to your vehicle in transit.

Are there specific auto transport insurance requirements?

Auto transport insurance coverage requirements can vary by state, so it pays to ask for their insurance policy details. Verify that their insurance covers pickup, transport, and delivery. Some transporters only have coverage once your vehicle is on the truck. The car hauler's insurance might also exclude things. These exclusions would make it hard to cover your vehicle if it got damaged in transit.

When you drop your car off, a transport company rep will inspect the vehicle. They will document any scratches and dents. You'll agree on the car's condition. A representative will repeat this process at the destination. At both drop-off and pickup, request a copy of the inspection. Assuming there's no new damage, you'll be on your way. If your vehicle gets damaged, destroyed during transport, file a claim with the transporter's insurer.

Can you transport a car without insurance?

If you do not plan to drive it at all, you may not need to have an auto insurance policy for your car while it's in transit. Transporting a car without insurance likely doesn't make sense. You'll need insurance to drive it to a drop-off point, pick it up, and drive around town once you get to your destination. And if there's an issue with the transporter's insurance, your auto insurance might be able to act as a backup, depending on your policy.

What types of auto insurance coverage cover auto transport damage?

Comprehensive car insurance may cover your car if it's damaged during transportation. This damage could be due to fire, wind, hail, flood, theft, vandalism, falling objects, or animals. Your auto collision coverage might apply if the driver of the transporter carrying your vehicle is involved in an accident. Every insurer is different, so check with yours to understand how coverage might work for transport-related claims.

Best practices when transporting a vehicle

When preparing to ship your car, some important things to do might include getting the transporter's motor carrier number and cleaning out your vehicle. When it comes to making sure your car is secure during shipping, follow these important steps.

Ask for proof of insurance

Any reputable auto transport company should be willing to show you their proof of insurance. Verify coverage levels and dates and ensure they can cover the cost of replacing your vehicle if it's totaled or stolen. Ask if there are any exclusions during pickup, loading, transit, and unloading. If they're hesitant to produce proof of insurance, consider that a red flag.

Check-in with your insurer

Your car insurance may be able to provide coverage if there are issues with the transporter's insurance. But, not all insurance policies cover your vehicle while it's in transit. Check with your insurer about coverage for auto transport.

Be there for drop-off and pickup

Like renting a car, make sure you're there for the inspections at drop-off and pickup. You may even choose to take pictures and notes. If you find new damage after transport, the inspecting representative should document it well. You can start a claim through the transporter's insurance, which may not cover any damage you find after the final inspection.

Get everything in writing

Before the move, make sure you have the documents for your auto transport agreement. They should include insurance and delivery info. .

What if I hire someone to drive my vehicle?

If you prefer, you can hire someone to drive your vehicle to the destination. If the driver crashes your car, it will depend on the circumstances whether your insurance or the driver's policy will apply. You should check with your insurer to see what your policy might cover in this situation. If the driver lacks their own auto insurance, you can ask them to get a non-owner car insurance policy. It should have the least liability coverage.

What makes Enterprise Auto Transport Different than other companies?

Do you know that 99% of auto transport brokers are not even brokers and are just telemarketers? At Enterprise Auto Transport you will speak with a licensed auto transport broker on every call.

Here are the things we are experienced doing.

We have over 11 years quoting experience. We know who runs late, you no shows, who damages cars and who to stay away from.

Before a carrier is allowed to pick up your vehicle all carriers must be qualified. For normal auto transport companies this means that they just find the carrier on Central Dispatch and grab his insurance information. For the majority, they do not check the DOT to see if the carrier has cargo insurance which is not required by the FMCSA. This protects your car. If you look up some of the companies who claim they are the highest rated in the industry and look at their negative reviews you will find thousands of cars damaged online and the sales rep never checked the insurance and the customer was left on the hook for the damage. You would be hard pressed to find an auto transport telemarketer that is calling you who has taken courses in DOT compliance let alone understands it. Not only do we check the carriers ratings with other brokers on Central Dispatch, we verify their insurance with the insurance company. To take a step further we look at their CSA. We are one of the few if not the only auto transport company that checks this. There is no formal education in auto transport for agents of brokers and sales people don't know to look at this as none of them are taught to. Even the owners of the companies don't teach about it. Take at look at our competitors websites and see if they mention anything about the CSA. They don't.

What does CSA stands for?

Compliance, Safety, Accountability. It is the safety compliance and enforcement program of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) that holds motor carriers and drivers accountable for their role in safety. CSA affects motor carriers, including owner-operators, by identifying those with safety problems to prioritize them for interventions such as warning letters and investigations. CSA affects drivers because their safety performance and compliance impact their safety records and, while working for a carrier, will impact their carrier’s safety record. A company’s safety data appears online in FMCSA’s Safety Measurement System (SMS). FMCSA updates the SMS once a month with data from roadside inspections, including driver and vehicle violations; crash reports from the last two years; and investigation results.

The SMS considers:

  1. • The number of safety violations and inspections

    • The severity of safety violations or crashes

    • When the safety violations occurred, with recent events weighted more heavily

    • The number of trucks/buses a carrier operates and the number of vehicle miles traveled

    • Acute and Critical Violations found during investigations

FMCSA organizes the SMS data into seven Behavior Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories (BASICs):

Unsafe Driving - Speeding, reckless driving, improper lane change, inattention

Crash Indicator - History of crash involvement (not public)

Hours of Compliance - Noncompliance with HOS regulations, including logbooks

Vehicle Maintenance - Brakes, lights, defects, failure to make required repairs

    Controlled Substances/ Alcohol Use/possession of controlled substances/alcohol

Driver Fitness Invalid license, medically unfit to operate a CMV

The SMS groups carriers by BASIC with other carriers that have a similar number of safety events (e.g., crashes, inspections, or violations) and then ranks carriers and assigns a percentile from 0 to 100 (the higher the percentile, the worse the performance) to prioritize them for interventions. Five million truck and bus drivers share the road with more than 250 million motorists. With stakes so high, it’s essential that you work with an auto transport company that requires every car carrier have good ratings in the CSA. This protects your car and people on the road. Your agent has taking courses with the FMCSA that are normally only required for carriers. We do this to make sure that the carriers we hire are in compliance. We will not just get information from load boards because the load board where all auto transport companies get information from is fraught with wrong information and expired data. Because companies do not bother checking all of this information, we believe that the majority of auto transport customers cars are at a higher risk for damage. Worst yet, the carrier may not even have a license or insurance.

Who governs the carriers? The FMCSA.

What is the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration?

FMCSA is one of 11 agencies within the Department of Transportation (DOT). As the lead agency responsible for regulating and providing safety oversight of the operation of commercial motor vehicles (CMVs), FMCSA's mission is to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities involving large trucks and buses. Supporting safety is impossible without collaboration. FMCSA partners with industry, safety advocates, and State and local governments to improve CMV safety across the nation through regulation, education, enforcement, research, technology, and other activities and initiatives. Through a safety compliance and enforcement program called Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA), FMCSA monitors the safety performance of each motor carrier from registration throughout the life of its business.

How Does FMCSA Monitor Carrier Safety Compliance?

FMCSA, together with various State agencies, assesses safety performance by collecting data about carriers through Safety Audits, roadside inspections, investigations, and crash reports.

What is a USDOT Number?

A USDOT number serves as a unique identifier when collecting and monitoring a company's safety information acquired during audits, compliance reviews, crash investigations, and inspections. Companies that operate commercial vehicles transporting passengers or hauling cargo in interstate commerce must be registered with FMCSA and must have a USDOT Number. Also, commercial interstate and intrastate hazardous materials carriers that haul types and quantities requiring a safety permit must register for a USDOT Number. At Enterprise Auto Transport we make sure that all of our carriers have USDOT Number that is active.

Interstate vs. Intrastate

Carriers who have commercial vehicle that is operated in interstate commerce are required to obtain a USDOT number. But what is interstate commerce and how is it different from intrastate commerce? Interstate Commerce is any trade, traffic, or transportation in the United States that crosses State lines. For example: • Beginning in one State and ending in another State • Beginning and ending in the same State but needing to go through and/or coming from another State or Country • Beginning and ending in the same State but the trade, traffic, or transportation started or ended in another State Intrastate Commerce is any trade, traffic, or transportation in the United States which is not described in the term “interstate commerce” above. Apart from Federal Regulations, some States require their intrastate CMV registrants to obtain a USDOT number.

Car Carriers are required to apply for a USDOT number if you operate a vehicle that meets the following requirements:

• It has at least a 10,001 pound manufacturer gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR),

• It is operated in interstate commerce.

In addition to requiring a USDOT number, some motor carriers are also required to have interstate Operating Authority (MC Number).

Auto Transport Insurance? What does fully insured mean?

When arranging the transportation of your vehicle, whether it's for a move, a temporary change of location, or acquiring a car from a different area, ensuring a secure and seamless transport process is paramount. One critical aspect to take into account is the insurance coverage for auto transport.

Understanding the significance of insurance and taking necessary precautions provides the confidence that your vehicle is shielded throughout the transportation journey.

Is Insurance Mandatory for Car Shipping?

In short, insurance isn't obligatory for shipping a car. Auto transporters are mandated by the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) to carry liability and cargo insurance, designed to safeguard against potential damage or loss during transit.

Auto Transport Insurance: Key Considerations

It's crucial to grasp what liability insurance encompasses. Typically, auto transporters' liability and cargo insurance cover damages caused by them during transportation, potentially leaving gaps in coverage for other risks and damages.

As the vehicle owner, it's advisable to secure your insurance coverage to protect against unforeseen events or damages during the shipping process, ensuring comprehensive protection.

Essential Auto Transport Insurance Requirements

When choosing an auto transport company, ensure their compliance with minimum insurance requirements. Factors such as the Motor Carrier (MC) number, Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements, availability of enclosed auto transport for additional protection, and understanding insurance policies regarding deductibles, coverage limits, and types of damage covered are vital. Some companies may offer optional additional coverage for added peace of mind.

Costs of Auto Transport Insurance

Auto transport insurance is typically included in the service, with no extra charges. Some companies may provide optional supplemental coverage for those seeking heightened protection.

Tips for a Smooth Car Shipping Experience

To guarantee a secure and smooth car shipping experience, consider the following suggestions:

1. Request evidence of insurance from the auto transport company.

2. Secure written agreements and document any special considerations.

3. Check your auto insurance policy for coverage during transit.

4. Remove personal items from the vehicle.

5. Conduct thorough inspections before and after shipping.

6. Properly document the vehicle's condition using the Bill of Lading.

Filing a Claim for Auto Transport Insurance

In the rare occurrence of damages during transit, filing a claim can be a straightforward process:

1. Acknowledge the rarity of damages during transit.

2. Compare the vehicle's condition before and after transport.

3. Promptly report damages to the auto shipping company.

4. If necessary, escalate the matter by filing a complaint with relevant authorities.
